[Career Conversations] Danny Hsia

Educe Group behind the scenes group of employees

Welcome to our employee spotlight blog series – Every other month we will feature a Q&A from one of our top employees at Educe Group. This month we are featuring Danny Hsia, Associate at Educe Group.

What do you do in your day-to-day role?

Danny Hsia_HeadshotI currently spend my days splitting time between two main roles: 1.) Helping clients with their LMS implementations or providing consulting support for existing LMS clients. 2.) Helping manage and grow our microapp business – a new initiative for me. Microapps are small software applications that our development team custom builds for clients. The microapps typically sit as a layer on top of an existing LMS or can be standalone. It’s a ton of fun and has gotten me back to my old days of product development!

What skills does your current job require? How have you mastered those skills?

I play a variety of roles, so it completely depends on the client. In some cases, I’m in the trenches, helping a client configure their LMS. It’s great in that it really requires that I know the LMS inside and out. In other cases, I’m supporting the client by understanding their business needs and interpreting those answers into real, useful solutions for their LMS. And finally, I often play the role of strategic partner with a client, working with project stakeholders and executives to understand a client’s needs and long-term vision. This requires me to build long-lasting connections with the client and understand the specific LMS or software I’m helping them develop. An LMS can very complex, so I have to keep up with the latest updates to provide recommendations and key insights for my clients.

What advice would you give to others working in Educe Group about how to succeed in the organization?

Be honest with yourself about what you know and what you don’t. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, both within the firm and with your clients. I truly can say that I wouldn’t hesitate to ask any of my colleagues something if I needed the help. The other big piece of advice is to be flexible. Every day can be different, given the variety of clients we have, the different stages they’re in with their LMS, and the different needs each client has.

What project/s are you most proud of?

I’m particularly proud of helping build a few different microapps that are game changers for our clients. I love seeing their eyes light up (virtually, these days!) when they see what we’ve been able to build for them. It’s rewarding to know the work you put forth from the beginning, from requirements gathering all the way to go-live, has been well-received. Outside of projects, I love hearing a past client talk about how much they still recall and appreciate the experience that my team, and Educe overall, provided for them months or even years ago. That’s personally a great thing to hear, and it’s something we as a firm aspire towards.

How do you successfully build relationships with clients?

You must earn their trust. This is not something that happens overnight. If you do right by the client and stay organized and communicative, I’ve typically found that they will come to trust you, even if the project has been a difficult one.

What do you feel sets us apart from other consulting firms?

Our people and our process.  Our Founding Partners, Charlie and Nyla, have continued to maintain the highest level of quality in our hires, and that’s no small feat. Our process to support clients is unparalleled. I’ve heard from plenty of clients, who have worked with other consulting firms in the past, that we provide a unique and an overall better experience for them.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?

My wife and I keep ourselves busy with an 8-year-old sports-crazed son, and my handful of a 5-year-old daughter!  But my zen time is when I can get out on the trails on my mountain bike and spin up a nice ride for a few hours!
