Hi, I’m Pat Horan, a Partner here at Educe. Today I’m going to talk about microapps, specifically what a microapp is, what it’s not, and how to know if a microapp solution is right for your organization. Let’s get started.
First, what is a microapp?
By definition, a microapp is a custom software application embedded in or adjacent to your talent or learning management system, to extend that platform’s core capabilities. Today’s learning and talent management platforms do a great job of addressing 95% of what companies need, right out-of-the-box. But businesses are not all the same. That gap, the 5% of unmet need, can be critical in making or breaking the adoption of and satisfaction with your chosen system.
I’ll use the metaphor of a house to illustrate. Your learning or talent management system is a “house” that is already built. Microapps are the different ways you can customize your house to make it more enjoyable to live in. From applying a fresh coat of paint to knocking down walls to expand your kitchen, there are countless ways to improve your house, some more involved than others. The same goes for your talent and LMS system – the foundation and core capabilities are there. And there are countless ways that microapps can be built to improve adoption and usability, streamline manual processes, and facilitate better engagement for your organization.
So, what are microapps not?
Microapps are not off-the-shelf software. They are custom-built to meet a defined set of requirements. And while there are common underlying development strategies that we utilize to build them, each customer’s platform is configured uniquely, and therefore each microapp must be built to optimize and enhance a customer’s ecosystem specifically. Let’s bring back our house metaphor here. While the layout for your house may be the same as your neighbor’s house, you may choose to update it by replacing your carpet with wood floors. Both are flooring, but the wood floors provide a different experience. The same is true of custom-built microapps.
How do you know if a microapp could be the solution you’re looking for?
Unfortunately, there isn’t a checklist I can give you to determine this on your own. However, if you are looking to:
- Simplify a complex process that is unique to your business
- Eliminate a manual workaround
- Improve the user experience of your platform
- Transform standard data formats between platforms
- Address another unique requirement
a microapp could be the answer. Reach out to your Educe engagement manager directly or contact us and we’ll be happy to have a conversation.
Thanks for listening!
